Hi from Toronto!
Right now, I am writing this blog post in TORONTO! Having arrived in Toronto yesterday, we just finished Day 2 of pageant week. If you’re wondering how the weather is in Toronto, it is over 30 degrees and scorching hot! Luckily, tonight it rained buckets outside and quenched the heat. Since I`ve gotten here it’s been very busy with rehearsals, photo and video shoots, various activities and appearances around Toronto. It’s all been very fun, especially meeting the 61 other delegates from across the nation!!
Tonight, after rehearsals, photo and video shoot, we had the pleasure of attending mentor night where several inspiring speakers (Dr. Natalie Archer, Melani Chong, Katrina Hadden, Alexandra Orlando) came in and presented speeches to us. I would love to introduce you to all the speakers and share with you all the insights that I learned from these amazing individuals in this blog post.
Dr. Natalie Archer is a dynamic Toronto dentist who began her dental career in 2001
She has managed to have a career and a family while building a career as a hospital dentist. Natalie is passionate about giving back and delivering results to her community; she is dedicated to helping her profession. Natalie expresses that “education is something that no one can ever take away from you.” I also believe that ongoing learning is lifelong. She also spoke about the importance of advanced planning. In order to reach her goals, we took calculated business risks, weighing the opportunity costs of the trade off between career and family at different points in her life. Due to her ability to analyze the situations ahead of time, she was able to succeed in her career while maintaining a strong relationship with her family. I really admire her qualities of hardwork, perservance, and strategetic thinking.
Melani Chong in fashion and beauty for over 15 years, Canadian Ford Model and mom of two children, Melani Chong developed a personalized skin care line called Soya Boutique. These organic products are a natural skin care collection that is useful for the whole family. What I found that was most interesting about Melani, is her diverse career path. She truly explored all her options and incorporated her interests into her career. Melani started out as an athlete, but when the call for modeling came, she was open to new things and accepted the opportunity. Later on, she became a stylist of hair, makeup, and fashion for photo shoots. She advocates that there are “many opportunities that you don’t realize, but you have to embrace them as your #1 goal and #1 focus.” Melani believes that there is a lot to learn in the world, and through changes in career paths, we are able to learn more about ourselves. One of her favorite quotes is “wise is he who knows what he does not know.” In her busy life, her tip is that taking care of yourself is the best way to stay on top of things. Currently, her beauty line combines her goals of helping people take care of themselves in an efficient way and the ideal of “beauty in simplicity.”
Katrina Hadden is a health and wellness specialist, size 12 model, life coach, motivational speaker and the author of the best-selling self-help book, Making It In High Heels.
Known for her positive energy and contagious smile, she helps her clients get better focused to achieve their goals and dreams . Katrina Hadden Life Coaching for Athletes has been a life coach for over eight years, specializing in Stress Management, Personal Development, Work-Life Balance and Health and Wellness. Growing up, she faced the difficulties of being bullied and fitting in. I find it very admirable how she overcame those hardships and is now working towards helping others overcome similar struggles as well especially in her books. Even though she understands that it may take a while to truly understand who you are, Katrina encourages people to take pride in beauty from the inside and out. She brings energy everywhere she goes! Katrina ends off giving us some tips on being a role model, which included carrying an attitude of gratitute, finding a way to forget about the world, forgivenss, taking care of our body and health. She was very sweet and wrote us all a card in response to all of our personal bios on the website!
Alexandra Orlando is a highly decorated world-class Rhythmic Gymnast. Her wisdom can be found inside the pages of an award winning book called In Pursuit of Victory.
Alexandra has just published her second motivational book, Breaking Through My Limits: An Olympian Uncovered.
Telling us about her experience with overcoming her “rock bottom” in her life when she didn’t make it to the olympics, Alex explains that the best way to overcome diffculties is to realize how strong you are. Even though we all have insecurities, fears, weaknesses, and aren’t perfect, she believes that everyone is “so much stronger than you think you are.”
